Rod started painting at a young age. With his first commission at just 14 years old, he knew then art was the path he would take and continue on.
Inspirations came from the Victorian artist/ illustrator Aubrey Beardsley and stained glass artist/ illustrator Harry Clarke. This graphic influence is still present in Rod's work today. After experimenting with various mediums he chose to work in acrylics, which he has stayed with for over thirty years.
Woodlands in particular have always been special to him, creating an ideal environment to escape and dream.
Rod felt a spiritual connection with the trees that surrounded him from an early age and he still visits the same woodland areas today to paint.
Trees play a vital role in his work, adding strength and structure, sometimes being stripped down to a graphic form resulting in a spiritual and unearthly presence. He has a strong understanding of his subject, physically and spiritually, as it is a bond that's been with him all his life.
As well as working from his studio, Rod loves to paint deep in the woods where he can draw positive energy from the trees, through his brush, and onto the canvas. This spiritual energy and Rod's emotional input can be felt by the viewer as it flows from the finished painting.
Rod has exhibited all over the UK, including many annual exhibitions in his home city of Bristol. His work features in many private collections globally.
